CKXR Radio: A Blast from the Past

Long ago.  Another life. CKXR Radio. My first full-time radio gig in a newsroom, was working under the amazing news director, Bob Crouse.

Now 91.5 FM, (then AM 580) I visited the site of the old/new station last August.

Current staff were very kind, and I also met the new news director, who was very excited that local news was again going to be major feature of the newly purchased station.

They allowed me to snap some pictures...a few things have changed.  But it was here I worked starting in 1988 to around 1990.

Yes, so long ago.

We could not find a place to live in Salmon Arm in those days, so I would drive the 90 minutes each way...to and from work. On Fridays, because I had to start work at 5:30....I would either leave at 4:00 am or just sleep on the floor in the station.

I guess if there was a "dream job" in my life, it had to have been this one.  I really loved the work and will be forever thankful I was able to use my small voice talents in a field that is becoming a lost art.

The entrance

Long Hallway to accounting and admin offices.

This was the "record" room. From the floor to ceiling..."records", aka "vinyl".

First door to the right was the record room

The Broadcast Booth...where I read the news.

The "Newsroom". On the far left would have been the "teletype", spouting off the latest news. Next to that would have been a "reel to reel" tape recorder...along with a cassette recorder.
